"Introduction to Tristate Medical Reserve Corps" flyer
Imagine that you are watching TV when a newscaster breaks in and announces that officials believe that Anthrax spores have been released in the air over Cincinnati and Norwood. Health officials are making plans to activate “Points of Dispensing” to administer medication to all Hamilton County residents within 48 hours in order to make sure no one becomes ill with the often fatal disease Anthrax. Does this sound far fetched? Actually, all health departments in the greater Cincinnati area are making just such plans, and they need your help.
With only 6 fulltime employees, the Norwood Health Department will need many trained volunteers to assist them in protecting Norwood and Hamilton County residents and workers in case the unthinkable happens right here. That’s where the “Tristate Medical Reserve Corps” (TMRC) comes in to play. “The Medical Reserve Corps is a group of average citizens, both medical and non-medical, who have volunteered to receive basic training and assist us in an emergency, and we are very grateful for their unselfish help.” TMRC volunteers can be as active as they choose and can respond in areas that they designate. If someone wants to only volunteer in Norwood, that’s fine. If they are available to respond anywhere in the country, their availability is indicated on their application. There are two steps that need to be completed in order to become a part of the Tristate Medical Reserve Corps: participants need to complete an application (either on line at www.serveohio.org or on paper) and complete a two hour introduction to the Medical Reserve Corps. The introductory course gives volunteers information about the TMRC, how they might become involved, what jobs they might be expected to perform and how to complete their own Family Emergency Plan.
The Norwood Health Department will host an “Introduction to the Tristate Medical Reserve Corps” on Thursday, April 24th from 6 – 8 p.m. at Norwood High School in the Mini Auditorium. A light meal and refreshments will be provided. Health Commissioner, Donna Laake, encourages anyone who might be thinking about volunteering to attend this event. There is no requirement to sign up for the Tristate Medical Reserve Corps after taking part in the training, but she hopes that many folks do. “We know that we will need many trained people to help us in distributing medications or in any potential disaster that could hit. We would love to have a list of Norwood residents that we could call upon to help: from doing paperwork, helping with traffic flow, nurses and doctors to pass out medication, people to do data entry and the many other jobs that go along with responding to emergencies” said Laake.
